Made In Ireland celebrates the wealth and vibrancy of Ireland’s studio crafts. The exhibition presents work by over 110 craftspeople each creating beautiful, considered objects using skills honed over many years.
Ireland’s makers, working in and across different sectors, are creating innovative work of high quality. Makers work in local and carefully sourced materials, across all regions of our island. Some are household names, but most work away quietly perfecting their skill and promoting their work regionally. The Irish public has shown itself to have a lively interest in craft, however, is largely unaware of the diverse range and quality of work being produced in the country by skilled makers. At a time when many are showing a considerable preference and appreciation for goods that are Irish made, we can think of no better time to create a colourful, inclusive exhibition that shows the very best of what is MADE IN IRELAND.
An Open Call invited submission from makers living on the island of Ireland and working in all materials, those practising traditional crafts as well as those working across different media. Over 420 proposals were received.
An Expert Panel were tasked with the difficult selection process: Peter Carroll, architect and director of A2Architects; Dr. Riann Coulter, curator, F.E. McWilliam Gallery; Irene Kernan, Director Craft Scotland; Dr. Audrey Whitty, Head of Collections and Learning, National Museum of Ireland; Neil Reed, Ceramicist; Kathleen Moran, Craft Retail Consultant and convened by: Mary Gallagher, owner of the Blue Egg Craft Gallery, Wexford.
The exhibition was proposed by Mary Gallagher, owner of Blue Egg Gallery, Wexford, and Hilary Morley, editor of MAKING.ie through NDCG’s 2019 call for proposals.
Curators: Hilary Morley Hilary Morley is a visual artist with extensive experience in the craft sector as a curator and project manager. She is the editor of MAKING.ie, an online journal celebrating Irish craft in archive, stories and review.
Stephen O’Connell has worked for many years in the decorative and applied arts, including a period as a decorative arts specialist at Christie’s in London. He curated After The Fall exhibition of contemporary Irish woodturning in South Tipperary Arts Centre in 2020, and is curating Lúnasa for the Lavit Gallery in Cork in August 2021.
